Description

These Halloween Pumpkin Patch Cupcakes are a festive and adorable treat perfect for Halloween parties or school events. Featuring moist cupcakes topped with green buttercream frosting shaped like grass, a pumpkin body made from a marshmallow covered in orange frosting, and decorated with orange and green M&M’s to resemble a pumpkin patch, they are both fun and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale

Cupcakes

  • 18 cupcakes baked in black cupcake liners

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 batch of The Best Buttercream Frosting
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System – Orange, Blue, Yellow, Red (for mixing orange and green colors)

Decorations

  • 18 regular-sized marshmallows
  • Orange M&M’s (about 20-25 per cupcake, approximately 450 total)
  • Green M&M’s (18, one per cupcake for pumpkin stem)

Instructions

  1. Prepare M&M’s: Pull out all the orange M&M’s from a large bag, ensuring you have about 20-25 orange M&M’s per cupcake to use for decoration.
  2. Bake Cupcakes: Bake 18 cupcakes using black cupcake liners following your favorite cupcake recipe. Allow them to cool completely before decorating.
  3. Make and Color Frosting: Prepare a batch of your best buttercream frosting. Tint a portion orange using the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System and another portion green for the grass effect.
  4. Apply Green Frosting: Cover the top of each cupcake with green buttercream frosting. Use a pastry bag fitted with Wilton Frosting Tip #233 to create a grass texture. Alternatively, you can smooth on the green frosting with a knife if preferred.
  5. Prepare Marshmallow Pumpkin: Take a regular-sized marshmallow and pull off about one-third from the top using your fingers to shape the pumpkin. Using a knife, spread a thin layer of orange frosting over the marshmallow just enough to make the M&M’s stick.
  6. Attach Marshmallow to Cupcake: Add a dollop of orange frosting to the center of the cupcake, then place the frosted marshmallow on top to form the pumpkin body.
  7. Decorate Pumpkin: With the ‘M’ side facing down, place orange M&M’s around the marshmallow. Start with the first row, then a second row. On the top of the marshmallow, add five orange M&M’s in a cluster, then place a single green M&M on top to represent the pumpkin stem.

Notes

  • These cupcakes are super cute, easy to assemble, and perfect for Halloween parties or school treats.
  • Using black cupcake liners enhances the Halloween theme and adds contrast to the vibrant frosting and decorations.
  • The Wilton Frosting Tip #233 is recommended for creating the grass effect but is optional.
  • Ensure cupcakes are fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Adjust the number of orange M&M’s per cupcake depending on cupcake size and personal decorative preference.
